It seems that there’s always a big, fat and ugly task in front of us that has to be completed, in order to move things forward.

For some reason we do not like that task, because it is too big, too complex, or just we do not enjoy doing it. The task does not resonate with what we usually do, but we have to get the job done!

“Ugly Tasks” by its nature are the most important tasks to complete. Logically, does not make any sense to procrastinate on the most important tasks that are going to make the difference in our business.

Well, it turns out that we are not logical beings. And the lack of motivation or lack of interest slows things down, and that’s is associated with our emotions.


Why “Ugly Tasks” Seem Discouraging?

1) The task is too big, fat and complex – we can’t get our heads around it at first. It seems like we do not know from where to start, let alone to get it done.

What To Do About It: Break down the tasks into smaller components or manageable pieces, where you can do only one piece or component of that task at a time. I find that the smaller the sub-tasks the better. View a big task as a large category that consists of smaller sub-categories. Big tasks seem to be too abstract, so we have to make them more specific, translating them into something more tangible to see the smaller pieces within it or different ways of completing it.

Example: Let’s say you have a website, but there are no visitors in it. You want to drive traffic to that website to get more visitors.

Isn’t that a big task? Right, from where to start? There are so many ways to drive traffic to a website, so we can get lost in the options we get.

First, you want to ask yourself, in how many ways I can do this task (driving traffic to a website)? Let’s say we know only two ways for simplicity: PPC (Per Per Click) & Social Media.

Second, you want to pick only one way of doing that task, let’s say we pick driving traffic using Social Media.

Third, you want to choose which Social Media site you want to use first, Twitter, Facebook etc. Let’s say we choose Twitter

Fourth, now what to do on Twitter to drive traffic to your website? This is more manageable task, and we can take action upon it right away, because we know what to do with it. If we had, driving traffic to the website, it is too general, and we do not know from where to start.

You want to drill down the bigger task into smaller pieces as shown in the example above to get the ugly task done.

2) The Task Is Unpleasant To Do, or Lack Of Interest – it is not fun completing that task, we do not like it, and there’s no way of even considering touching it, unless we wash our hands later :-]

What To Do About It: Develop a sense of urgency. That’s the inner drive to get the job done, because you may lose something along the way if you do not. So you want to set a deadline to complete that task that usually creates a sense of urgency.

Example: Ask yourself, “what I am going to LOSE, if I do not complete this ugly task?” If it is something insignificant, then that’s the reason why you are procrastinating it, because you are not going to lose as much, if you do not complete this task. You want to set up the stage in a way that you can lose something big if the task is not completed on time.

Ask yourself, what do you fear the most? And say to yourself, If I do not complete this task, my worst fear may come true. Then try to imagine as if the worst fear is really happening or at least you want to consider it, so if you want to avoid that fear, you better do this UGLY TASK right away…

Fear is one of the most powerful motivators of the human psyche, you can use it at your advantage to get things done.

3) Fear Of Failure – we do not want to face the consequences of failure so we postpone and delay tasks and projects for longer period of time

What To Do About It: What does failure mean to you? Is it an obstacle? Why do you fear failure? What would happen if you fail? Answer to each of those questions on a piece of paper. The fear of failure can be defeated by facing the consequences directly. You need to have the courage to face the failure and imagine the worst possible outcome there is. Fear of failure has a lot to do with perfectionism, trying to make things perfect so we do not have to fail, because it is all perfect.

Example: I fear that if I do not get the job done, I am not going to get the results that I want for myself, I am going to lose everything and be poor until the rest of my life. Debt collectors knocking on my door all the time. If I really want to prevent that from happening, I better get the job done. The task may be ugly and uninteresting, but I have to get it done if I really want to get the results that I want out of my business.

4) Fear Of Success – if we succeed at this task, that means there would be more work and responsibility and we do not want that.

Most people take “the easy” way, they like to be lazy and collect the checks in the mail. So when they see a lot of work in from of them, they procrastinate and not getting it done.

If nothing is done, there’s no progress. Fear of success or self-sabotage is getting in our way to become who we really want.

What To Do About It: The more we accomplish things and bring tasks the completion, the more our work is not going to feel like real work. That’s because our brain releases endorphins each time we complete a task, and we feel certain sense of accomplishment as we do, building momentum as we go along. Yes, there is going to be more work, and there’s going to be more responsibility, but if you really want the results you want out your business, if you really want more freedom (time and financial), you are going to achieve a lot more, and people are going to respect or like you even more as a result of that.

Example: Do you remember the recent funeral of Michael Jackson? When he was alive, the press was insulting him for various of reasons, but after his death, people remember his achievements and successes more than the flaws he had, and they respect him more for the success and the achievements he made in his career. It seemed to be a lot of work, performing on stage, concerts, preparations, but the show business did not seem as real work for Michael Jackson, and he loved what he was doing. All of his accomplishments were based on lots of effort, responsibility and hard work.

5) Distractions – they cause delays, because we lose concentration. We get carried away from our work, and it takes long time to come back to where we were. It is a form of procrastination, because as others interrupt us, we try to escape in long conversations with them or hanging out with them as an excuse of not doing the work.

It is like, “Oh, you interrupt me, thanks God!” :-] I was about to do it myself, but now I have a good reason for it.

This is going to slow things down tremendously, escaping every time we try to finish an important task…

However, there’s something you can do in this scenario, when someone interrupts you in the middle of your work, and you escape with them in order to eliminate the emotional burden from the “ugly task.”

When someone interrupts you, it gives you good reasons to postpone that task. Now it is the time to find good reasons why you SHOULD NOT postpone that task to overcome the reasons why you should.

If the “should not” reasons are stronger than “should” reasons, you’ll deal with the interruptions accordingly, and force yourself to get the job done.

So next time when you do not like a task, and someone interrupts you, as if he/she is your “savior,” ask yourself, “If I go along with this person, and if I do not get this job done, how’s that going to affect my business?” Find as many bad reasons as you can to STAY at it. 

6) Doing The Insignificant Stuff First – we get caught up in checking emails, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter stats, and other activities that you really shouldn’t be doing which take a large portion of your day, and we end up doing nothing that’s important (the ugliest, biggest and fattest task).

Procrastination is really the enemy of progress. If we know our goals, we have a plan to follow, but for some reason we procrastinate and on TOP of that we want to learn how to overcome procrastination, but we even procrastinate reading stuff about overcoming procrastination.

What You’ll Learn?

In this article, I am going to show you a simple way to make procrastination your friend, instead of fighting it. Why? That’s because it is already an established habit that’s driving things to another direction. And habits are tough to break, it usually takes up to 30 days to establish a new habit, and eliminate the old one. It comes with persistent commitment, consistency and determination.


Here’s How To Make Procrastination Your Friend

1) Do the most important and unpleasant task FIRST, and procrastinate the rest. You want to procrastinate checking emails, going on Facebook, and checking stats to see if someone sent you a message or talked about you.

Simply, say to yourself, “well if I check my email, I am not going to find something significant or interesting at the moment, and if I do not see what my friends are doing on Facebook, it is not going to be a big deal, or perhaps I am going to check it later.”

When you make the small things uninterested or boring, you are going to procrastinate them, so this will allow you to focus at your most important activities.

2) Set “Oxygen” Goalssetting goals may not seem to work for you pretty well. That’s because they are too vague or not specific enough. I did not like setting goals to myself either, but ones I did it correctly, I just did not stop conquering and setting new ones. This alone motivates the hell out of me.

The more specific goals you set to yourself, the less likely to procrastinate on tasks necessary to achieve those goals.

Example: If I set a goal that’s, let’s say, “make money online,” this is NOT going to do it. Why? Because it is not specific. The abstract things, does not seem to engage us and it does not seem to motivate us. It is like saying “fruit,” it can be anything, but if you say, “I love bananas” or whatever your favorite fruit is, you know that it is NOT any fruit, but a specific one.

If you see the outcome clearly, and the results that are going to bring that outcome, you are going to invest more emotions to it, and eventually overcoming the threshold of the procrastination.

Most people do not get the “setting goals” part. The truth is…

Setting goals is like being under water. How bad you want to get back to the surface to get some air, after a long time under the water without oxygen? The more you stay under the water, the more you’ll fight to get oxygen. That’s goal setting, you know what you want specifically, “oxygen” you want to breathe and you want to survive. That’s the motivation and the determination you need from yourself to set your goals correctly.

So every time you set a goal, ask yourself, “Can I breathe?” If the answer is “yes, sure” then you want to dive more deeper into the water, until you become desperate enough to need that desired outcome: getting more oxygen.

3) Get lazy at checking emails and social media stats – the excitement and the curiosity that comes with checking stats makes you do it over and over again. Create curiosity about the most important tasks you have to complete, even if you are currently postponing it.

Ask yourself, “Why am I postponing this task?” Find ways you can benefit from completing the task you aren’t interested as much or the task you are postpone the most. Find reasons to do it, even turn the things around, say it is not hard doing this, or it is a piece of cake and get it done.

The more you can “fake it” the more you’ll believe it, and eventually take it for granted. This is what you want.

The more you tell “lies” to yourself, the more you are going to believe them and eventually, what you thought of unpleasant, you are going to find it quite fun. I know it sounds weird, but if you try this, you’ll see results – guaranteed.

When we try to make thing perfect, we get caught up in doing every detail, doing lots of research and in striking to make thing better the first time.We just can’t help it, because almost nobody loves failure and things that do not work the first time.

In this article, I am going to show you ways to deal with procrastination and avoid making things perfect so that you can get the job done in the first place, without worrying about holes, bugs and minor details in the first place.


Why this is important?

Perfection is the enemy of progress. When we strive in making things perfect, we lose the ability to take action. That’s because when we focus on every detail, even hole that supposed to be filed, before we start that project, we get exhausted at the end, and we do not find enough time to move things forward.

And often times, because of the fear of failure, we do not get things started in the first place, because we are not sure if that’s perfect or worth enough. Always something new and better comes along the way, and we can’t make that decision to get started.

We try to decide which tool would perform better, which system would perform better and which detail would be appropriate for the occasion.

This is what I call, “the loop of the inevitability.” We are running in circles all the time, not knowing what’s better, and what method to use in the first place. So we end up doing nothing at all.


How to fix that?

Well, there’s a simple way to avoid making things perfect and that is testing first, then make things “perfect.”

When we test a headline, an article, a video or any other medium of information, based on measurements and results we can decide if that was good or not.

Because often what things seem to be “perfect” to us, they do not seem to perform really well.So we end up rationalizing and coming up with reasons that are beyond the scope of this article :-]


Expect That Nothing Is Going To Turn Well The First Time

That’s reality, always the first try is the worse, especially if you haven’t done anything like that in the past. How many times you find yourself doing things better, because you gain more experience, more confidence and see actual results, based on that?


Good Practice Makes Things Better

There’s a lie out there that “practice makes perfect.” If you practice WRONG, you make things worse.

Let me tell you a quick story…

A student goes to his martial arts master and asks him the following question, “Sensei, can I practice at home, doing the things you teach us, so that I can be better student?” The martial arts master looked at the student and replied, “well, if you do that, and if you learn something wrong, because you do not have my guidance, you are going to learn it in a bad way, so you are going to make my job harder to teach you the right way, and you have to unlearn what you already have, because form in martial arts is fundamental.”

Just as the martial arts master, you want to take a good practice, by testing and tweaking your performance, because you are your own master. You do not have someone by your side to show you the “right way.” We have to figure out for ourselves, and the best way to do that is by testing different things in our business. “Failure Is To Instruct, Not To Obstruct” – Brian Tracy

The fear of failure is one of the major reasons why we try to make things perfect the first time. We do not want to fail, it does not feel good, and often times we quit trying if things do not work the first time.

What I’ve learned over the years is that failure is my friend. It moves me one step closer to where I want to go and be. That’s because if you fail, you LEARN what did not work before, and that’s a lesson by itself.

Honoring failure is like honoring your efforts, because we become all that we can be from failures, adapting, tweaking and re-adjusting things. That’s how we learn. Success is not by accident for most people, because they failed so many times, finding the flaws along the way, not repeating the same mistakes over and over again, until they found the way and sticking to it.

If you have fear that something isn’t going to work, ask yourself, “What would happen if that does not work?”

When you consider the possibility of failure, you are open to new things, and trying new methods, without getting stuck in choosing the “right one.”

Today we get bombarded by thousands of training courses and sales messages on the Internet. The next shiny thing comes after another. Perhaps you’ve already subscribed to different newsletters, just to keep track with the next innovative strategy and magic bullet.


But Why Taking So Many Courses Doesn’t Get You Anywhere?

Learning new things can become an addiction, the thirst for knowledge seems to overwhelm our senses, and we do not take action. Taking one training course after another, just because we try to avoid getting anything done, is the absolute performance killer.

In fact, if we do not take action, the more training courses we watch, read or study, the more confuse we get, because it seems that some ideas contradict with another. The truth is…


What Works For Someone Does Not Necessary Mean Is Going To Work For You

Way too many factors are involved in “what actually works,” such as type of audience, the market you are in, the nature of your products/services, the time when the training course was created, and your individuality. Combining all those may seem to disconnect you from what works when other people teach their training courses.

I am not saying other people’s courses aren’t valuable, especially if you get courses from people with lots of experience, their insights are valuable, and often may help you.

But all the insights they get are based on their own unique situations, and you do not know what that even means to you.

So if someone says to you, “this works better,” in reality, it may perform worse for you. This does not mean that person was lying or anything, but that’s just the way things perform for them.


That’s Why You Want To Test The Hell Out Of Everything

Testing is everything. This is the only way to know what actually is going to work for you. And based on the results you get, and the feedback from your measurements, you’ll get valuable insights to improve your business dramatically. Combining that with the person you trust, and buying courses from them, you can really accomplish a lot, in just a short period of time.


What To Do Before And After You Buy A Training Course?

1) Look for experts. Get training course materials from people who have at least 5+ years of experience in what you are trying to accomplish. Today, everyone has an opinion about anything, even if they do not know what they are talking about. You want to learn from people who have a lot of experience down the road…

2) Take notes on action steps and important points. Outline the action steps the person gives you in the training course. Draw graphs and diagrams to express the point of view of the mentor and what he or she’s teaching you about. Even you may want to create a “flow chart” with the process you are about to implement from that course. Write down the process, with the series of those action steps.

3) Be consistent. Start the course from the beginning to the end. Do all exercises, if applicable, for that training course. Some training courses are giving you exercises. You want to take action immediately, because if you do not do those exercises, what you’ll learn is going to be forgotten very quickly.

4) Write down all “aha” moments. When you have an insight about anything, write them down with your own words. Keep a collection with all your insights, and see how that’s going to help you implementing each action step. You may want to review them ones a week.

5) Name the files properly. If it is a digital course or an information product, rename the files in a way that are going to make sense to you. If you come back to them you know where to look for those ideas that you’ve learned previously. We do not learn the first time we encounter new information. Repetition is necessary to absorb the material completely. However, I found that when you learn as you write, you memorize much better. Revising the notes in a month can help you internalize the information and apply it into your life.

6) Implement the action steps immediately. If you wait 2-3 days, you’ll lose, and the course you’ve taken, is going to be of no value to you. You want to take action immediately, after the course is complete. You may want to review parts of the course again, in case you want to review important points for implementing that action.

7) Apply and test all action steps, but do not expect them to work the first time. See how you can expand that idea on your own, based on what you’ve learned from taking action. This is a process, and it takes time. If the action requires repetition, you may have your own take on that idea, as soon as you measure the performance of it and if it works.

When we take action, we learn things that are beyond the scope of any training course. That’s because, the training course does not give you everything you need. They just give you the direction, or they just open the door for you. You have to walk through it.

That’s because…

According to your specific situation, complications may occur, so you want to emotionally detach yourself from all ideas you get in the training course and test them completely. If they do not work, always be open and try something else.
